Manga vs. Marvel

This is definitely on the geeky side but still very interesting. Comparing how Marvel artists and Manga artist drew some of the key scenes from the episodes 4-6. You get a clear sense of the constraints that the Marvel artists had with their limited space and strict codes from the Comics Code Authority. Also with Manga issue being huge and very gory by American standards Lots of scenes have their drama lavishly drawn out[no pun] over several pages. This scene depicting the destruction of Alderaan is particularly striking.

Everyblock is the latest creation from mastermind, Adrian Holovaty. Who was also behind chicagocrime and Django. At first Everyblock seems to be just an expanded chicagocrime, with the blotter as well data from other areas [food inspection, craigslist, etc.]. But as you start to go through all of this information that has been aggregated into single point of reference you begin to see neighborhoods take shape. Its a great way to become familiar with own environment [if you live in chicago, nyc or san fran] or explore other places in way you normally wouldn't.

Rob Meek and Frank Müller, designed the Meek FM a synth that uses typesfaces for sound genereation and typographic creation. Through the hardware interface[ which is quite sexy btw] and special software, you can manipulate a character and the software will 'play' the character and the adjustments you make, like adding serifs and doing hot shit like glyph rotation [i wish i had something with a glyph rotation knob] you can create cutsom typefaces and sounds.

So this week at the D5:All Things D conference Bill Gates introuduced the Surface Microsoft's mutli-touch interface. Originally developed at NYU it's now going commercial. While this is super slick we're still at incubation level. All the applications are more novelty than anything ground-breaking and the actual device is too pricey for the consumer enviroment yet.
